Abstract
Etodolac (Lodine¢ç) was characterized that it does not inhibit biosynthesis of cytoprotective prostaglandin in :gastric mucosa and exerts only placebo-level gastrointestinal. side ¢¥effects, as an epochal antiinflammatory/analgesic agent solving the gastrointestinal problems of other existing NSAIDS.
Authors clinically treated patients having several orhtopedic conditions with this newly developed nonsteroid anti-inflammatory "Etodolac" which belongs to the tetrahydropyranoindole nucleus for the evaluation of it¢¥s efficacy.
Following results were obtained:
I . The efficay of the drug was not influenced by the pateint¢¥s sex and age and causative disease and it¢¥s severity.
2. In degenerative knee joints, symptomatical imporvement obtained in 83.3% on spontaneous pain, 80.0% on night pain, 50% on tenderness and 33.3% on pain on motion.
3. In rheumatoid arthritis, 57.3% on spontaneous pain, 41.7% on tenderness and pain on motion, respe tively, were symptomatically improved. Especially limitation of motion improved in 7 out of 12 (53.3%) patients. However, joint swelling were not apparently improved.
4. The pericapsulitis of the shoulder was less improved due to limitation of motion itself. However, luribago was symptomatically improved in 3 out of 5(60%).
5. There were few side effects such as gastric discomfort or gastric pain, constipation, generalized edema and so on.
Through this study, Etodolac was found to be very effective and well tolerated for treatment. The musculoskeletal disease, and side effects were very few and generally mild.
